The presence of copper (3.5–4.5%), magnesium (0.4–0.8%), and manganese (0.4–1.0%) is found in Aluminium 2017. It has tensile strength up to ≈430 MPa in T4 temper. The alloy is heat treatable and has good machinability, moderate corrosion resistance, and good workability. Forging improves its structure and grain uniformity, making it suitable for high-stress components.

Aluminum 2017 is suitable for forging but has limited high-temperature resistance. For high-temperature forging applications, consider alloys with better heat resistance, like 2219 or 2618.
The workability of Aluminum 2017, being moderate, affects forging by requiring precise temperature control (400–480°C) to prevent cracking and achieve proper plastic deformation, making it suitable for intricate shapes with care.
