Aluminium 2024 has 3.8–4.9% copper, 1.2–1.8% magnesium, and 0.3–0.9% manganese. It has tensile strength of ~470 MPa, yield strength ~325 MPa, and good resistance to fatigue in T3511 temper. It has poor corrosion resistance but good machinability and high fracture toughness. The alloy is solution heat-treated, stress relieved, and naturally aged, having good dimensional stability and resistance to crack under stress. 2024 T3511 cannot be welded by standard techniques but can be mechanically assembled. It is light in weight and very reliable under dynamic loading.
