Inconel 617 forgings are primarily made of nickel, with notable amounts of chromium, cobalt, and molybdenum, which together offer remarkable resistance to high-temperature corrosion and oxidation. The typical composition features around 51% nickel, 22% chromium, 12.5% cobalt, and 9% molybdenum. Mechanically, these forgings boast high tensile strength, impressive creep rupture strength, and good fabricability. At room temperature, the tensile strength hovers around 760 MPa, with a yield strength of about 350 MPa and an elongation of roughly 35%. This unique blend of properties allows Inconel 617 forgings to maintain their structural integrity even in extreme thermal conditions.

Temperature control during forging of Inconel 617 ensures optimal grain structure, improving its strength, durability, and resistance to thermal creep. Proper temperature management also prevents material defects like cracking or distortion, enhancing overall quality.
Inconel 617 forgings may experience reduced ductility at lower temperatures, limiting their ease of fabrication. Additionally, they can be costly due to the complex alloy composition and manufacturing processes.
Inconel 617 forgings require periodic inspections to detect signs of oxidation or wear, particularly at elevated temperatures. Regular cleaning and protective coatings can help maintain their performance in harsh, high-temperature environments.
Inconel 617 forgings find extensive application in industries that demand materials capable of enduring extreme heat and harsh environments. They are commonly used in aerospace components like combustion cans and transition liners in jet engines, as well as in gas turbines and power generation systems. The alloy’s resistance to oxidation and carburization makes it ideal for industrial furnaces and heat-treating equipment. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in nuclear power plants, chemical processing units, and petrochemical refineries. Thanks to its outstanding mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, Inconel 617 forgings promise a long service life and dependable performance.
