Invar is an iron–nickel alloy of about 36% nickel and the remainder iron, along with small quantities of carbon (~0.2%), manganese (~0.35%), and silicon (~0.5%). This composition leads to a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Mechanical properties are tensile strength in the range of 550–750 MPa, elongation of ~25%, and superior fatigue resistance. Invar has dimension stability over a broad range of temperatures with good machinability and weldability. Such properties render it highly suitable for making precision parts that require precise dimensions under changing or extreme temperature conditions.
