Invar 42 consists mainly of 42% nickel and remainder iron, with small amounts of manganese (1.2%), silicon (0.5%), and carbon (0.05%), together with trace elements. It has a very small coefficient of thermal expansion (1.3 × 10⁻⁶/°C), which allows for very high dimensional stability across temperature variations. The alloy provides tensile properties of 600–850 MPa and yield properties of 250–450 MPa, with an elongation of 25–35%. It has good weldability and machinability and retains its performance on thermal cycling.
