Nitronic 40 has about 20% chromium, 6% manganese, 9% nickel, and nitrogen. It provides tensile strength of about 690 MPa and has very good impact toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The alloy shows resistance to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, and has better oxidation resistance than common stainless steels. Nitronic 40 can be cold worked for enhanced strength without losing ductility and is fully austenitic under all temperatures.
