SAE 1015 is a low-carbon steel that contains about 0.13–0.18% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese, along with trace amounts of sulfur and phosphorus. This unique composition provides it with impressive ductility, formability, and weldability. When in its cold-drawn or normalized state, it boasts a tensile strength of around 440–580 MPa and a yield strength of about 250–350 MPa, with an elongation of 25–30%. SAE 1015 also offers a great surface finish and consistent mechanical properties, making it an excellent choice for parts that need moderate strength and superb machining characteristics, especially when carburized for enhanced surface hardness.
