Stainless Steel 416 is a free-machining martensitic stainless steel alloy that contains about 12–14% chromium, a maximum of 0.15% carbon, and added sulfur (0.15–0.35%) to boost machinability. It offers moderate corrosion resistance along with impressive mechanical properties. After undergoing heat treatment, it can reach a tensile strength of 550–750 MPa, a yield strength of around 275 MPa, and a hardness of up to 35 HRC. This alloy is magnetic and can be hardened through heat treatment. While it may not resist corrosion as well as austenitic grades, it excels in high-speed machining applications thanks to its enhanced chip-breaking and surface finish characteristics.
