Stainless Steel 416 is a martensitic stainless steel alloy that mainly consists of 12–14% chromium, with added sulfur (0.15–0.35%) to boost machinability. This alloy is known for its excellent machinability, making it the easiest stainless steel grade to work with. Typical mechanical properties include a tensile strength ranging from 550–760 MPa and a yield strength of about 275 MPa. It can be hardened through heat treatment to enhance its strength and wear resistance. While its corrosion resistance isn’t as high as that of austenitic grades, SS 416 performs admirably in mild environments, especially in applications that require high-speed machining and good dimensional stability.
