Stainless Steel 420 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel alloy that contains about 12–14% chromium and at least 0.15% carbon. It delivers remarkable hardness and strength after heat treatment, along with moderate resistance to corrosion. Typical mechanical properties include a tensile strength ranging from 700 to 1000 MPa, a yield strength of around 500 MPa, and a hardness of up to 55 HRC when fully hardened. SS 420 is magnetic and responds well to hardening and polishing. While it may not offer the same level of corrosion resistance as austenitic grades, it performs reliably in less aggressive environments where wear resistance is crucial.
